DO-178B, is described in the RTCA Document RTCA/DO-178B, titled “Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification,” was developed by the avionics industry to establish software considerations for developers, installers, and users, when aircraft equipment design is implemented using microcomputer techniques.  55% of all commercial airborn software based systems are developed to DO-178B, Level A - the most stringent certification level.

DO-178B projects must be certified as a system, not a standalone component. Validated Software software components are sold to assist customers in rapidly and reliably achieving DO-178B certification.
